At that time the well-known Leimonas School functioned within the monastery enclosure and it remained open until 1923. Since its foundation, the monastery has kept its archive intact and continuous, and there are documents dating to before 1527. This makes it the most complete and important archive on Lesvos and, after those of Mount Athos and Patmos, one of the most important anywhere in Greece in terms of the richness and antiquity of its manuscripts, including some which date back to the ninth century and are illustrated with magnificent miniatures. The library of printed books contains some 5,000 volumes, some of them very rare-incunabula, indeed.
